Sales Strategy

Hiring a salesperson isn't always the first step when you need to grow

Hiring a salesperson isn't always the first step when you need to grow

It’s one of the most common growth moves a small business makes — and one of the most expensive mistakes we hear about.

You’re generating revenue through the founder’s network or word of mouth. Momentum has stalled or hit a hamster wheel. And the decision gets made: we need more revenue, so let’s bring in a dedicated salesperson.

The thinking makes sense. Hire someone whose whole job is to sell.

We hear this story constantly at BoomCloud. And often, the problem isn’t the salesperson.

The Real Issue: You May Not Be Ready to Support a Salesperson Yet

When a founder decides to hire a seller, the instinct is to hand them a business card and point them toward the market. But a salesperson without infrastructure is set up to underperform.

Before a salesperson can succeed, a business needs to answer some foundational questions:

  • What does your CRM look like — are you tracking activity, or running off spreadsheets?
  • Do you have a defined sales process?
  • Is there any top-of-funnel activity happening, or is the salesperson expected to build all of that from scratch?

Statistically, the odds of landing someone who can handle all of this aren’t in your favor either.

Out of any three salespeople: one is a rockstar who will hit their number no matter what. One is coachable and can get there with the right support. The third simply won’t perform.

That means a small business hiring their first salesperson has a one-in-three chance of landing someone who won’t deliver — and that’s assuming the environment is set up for success to begin with.

What Should Come First

Before making a sales hire, invest in the systems and infrastructure that make a salesperson effective:

  • A CRM that’s configured and actually used
  • A clear outbound strategy — cold outreach, email campaigns, targeted calling
  • A defined channel or referral program
  • Focused, intentional networking — not just attending every chamber event on the calendar

At BoomCloud, we often step in before a company is ready to hire — or alongside an existing sales team — to build the foundation that makes selling consistent. Cold outreach gets done. Prospect lists get built. HubSpot gets configured to surface the right data. And salespeople are freed up to do what they do best: close.

The Takeaway

Hiring a salesperson is not a sales strategy. It’s a resource. And like any resource, it performs best when it has the right environment to operate in.

If your business is considering a sales hire, ask yourself first: what will this person walk into?

If the honest answer is “not much” — it may be time to build the machine first.

Let's build your sales machine.
